“We’re proud to make a real impact on climate protection.”

Jennie Jouvenaar, Director of Sustainability, EF Education First

Overview

Founded in 1965, EF Education First is a global association of education companies that shares a common mission of opening the world through education, offering language, academic, cultural exchange, and educational travel programs.

Recognizing the importance of reforestation in the fight against climate change, EF Education First developed its EF Forest Initiative in 2021 to create and conserve forests around the world. In that short amount of time, the initiative has resulted in the planting of nine million mangrove trees in Kenya, Madagascar and Mozambique. In the initiative’s second phase, EF is expanding its support to reforestation by partnering with WeForest to grow three million trees and regenerate 1500 hectares of land in the Mahale Mountains in Tanzania. In addition to protecting a critical ecosystem that is home to the largest remaining population of eastern chimpanzees, the project also seeks to strengthen local communities through education and agroforestry programs.

Our partnership

WeForest’s commitment to educating local communities on the importance of sustainable, forest-friendly farming practices strongly aligns with EF’s mission to open the world through education. By educating local farmers on agroforestry practices – a sustainable land management approach that integrates trees, crops, and occasionally animals on the same piece of land – the project will protect local wildlife and increase biodiversity while supporting agricultural productivity and local livelihoods.

EF Education First and WeForest have set the following targets for the Mahale Mountains project:

0
trees grown and nurtured
0 ha
of smallholder farmland impacted
0
farmers supported through agroforestry

“The educational component of the project is very important to us; by providing training on sustainable land management practices, we will not only support the environment and local wildlife, but also strengthen local communities.”
